An MP calls for a review of inheritance tax changes affecting farmers’ estates
Enville: An MP recently met with farmers and NFU representatives. They discussed various challenges farmers face today. The meeting focused on upcoming inheritance tax changes that will impact agricultural assets.
Starting April 2026, inherited farm assets over £1 million will face a 20% tax. This change worries many farmers who rely on these assets for their family farms.
Other topics included rural crime, agricultural planning, and taxes on vehicles and fertilizers. They also talked about recent animal disease outbreaks in Europe.
Conservative MP Mr. Wood emphasized the difficulties in farming today. He believes the government should support farmers better, especially regarding the inheritance tax.
He suggested scrapping the new tax and focusing on regulatory changes that help farmers. This way, family farms can continue for future generations.
Farmers like Nigel Adams found the meeting positive. It allowed them to share their concerns about government policies affecting their farms.
Hannah Cains from NFU appreciated the chance to meet with Mr. Wood. She stressed the importance of working together to ensure farmers’ voices are heard.
The government stated that most estates won’t be affected by the tax changes. They expect only the wealthiest 500 estates to face the new rules.
They reassured that nearly three-quarters of estates claiming agricultural relief would remain unaffected.
