Reading’s Labour MPs react to the announcement of a delayed new hospital, expressing both commitment and frustration over the timeline.
Reading: During the election, Labour candidates promised a new hospital for the community. They made this pledge while visiting the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
All three candidates won their seats last July. Matt Rodda, Olivia Bailey, and Yuan Yang were the faces behind this commitment.
But now, the Labour government has announced that the new hospital won’t be ready until 2035-39. That’s quite a wait, right?
In response, the MPs said they’re glad there’s a plan, but they’re also disappointed about the delay. They’re determined to push for the hospital to be built sooner.
They pointed out that this delay is due to the previous Conservative government making promises without the funds to back them up. The current government is now trying to fix that.
Wes Streeting, Labour’s health secretary, emphasized that the previous hospital program was unfunded and unrealistic. He’s committed to making sure the new Royal Berkshire Hospital becomes a reality.
With the new deadline set for 2035-39, it feels like a long way off, especially since it’s past the next election cycle. The MPs are ready to keep fighting for their community’s needs.
