Simone White’s mother shares her daughter’s last message before a tragic poisoning incident in Laos that claimed six lives.
Vang Vieng: Simone White’s mother, Sue, shared her daughter’s last text. Simone, a 28-year-old lawyer, tragically died after drinking poisoned shots.
Last November, six tourists died after consuming methanol-laced drinks at a hostel bar. Sue traveled 16 hours from Kent to Laos upon hearing the news.
Doctors informed her that Simone needed emergency brain surgery. After arriving, Sue faced the heartbreaking decision to turn off her daughter’s life support.
Simone’s cause of death was confirmed as a brain bleed. Three months later, Sue revealed the last message she received from Simone.
On Australia’s 60 Minutes, Sue shared that Simone texted, “I’m having the best time, it’s an absolutely fantastic holiday.” This was just before the incident.
Simone’s friend, Bethany Clarke, also drank the same shots but survived. She recalled feeling lethargic the next day, unaware of the poisoning.
Bethany described the symptoms as feeling paralyzed and fainting. They were taken to the hospital, where Simone’s condition worsened.
Eight hostel employees were arrested, but no charges have been filed. The hostel has since closed its doors.
Staff claimed they bought alcohol from a licensed seller. However, some guests reported staff refusing to call for help during the crisis.
Methanol is a toxic alcohol that can cause severe health issues. Just a small amount can lead to blindness or death.
Experts say methanol poisoning is serious and requires immediate medical attention. Treatment may involve administering regular alcohol to counteract the effects.
