Nairn’s community councils could merge, sparking discussions on local representation and community engagement in the area.
The Highland Council is looking into this as part of a wider review. They kicked off a public consultation last week to get everyone’s thoughts.
If the merger goes through, it would create one council for about 10,000 people, making it the largest in the Highlands. Right now, Thurso holds that title with just over 7,300 residents.
People have been chatting about this for a while. Some think it could streamline things and make better use of resources. Others are worried it might water down local representation.
Both councils are set to meet this week to discuss the proposals. There are also talks about splitting the East Nairnshire Community Council area and merging it with others.
Councillor Paul Oldham shared his thoughts in a newsletter, saying he sees merit in the split, especially since the East Nairnshire council hasn’t been active lately.
The council is also looking to boost youth involvement by increasing the number of youth members. They want to make sure community councils reflect the needs and opinions of the people they serve.
The consultation is open until April 9, and they’re eager to hear from everyone. If you want to weigh in, you can find more info on how to do that. It’s a chance for locals to shape their community’s future!
