Blackburn: New detectors are now at traffic lights in the area. Many people were curious about what these devices do.

Some messages claimed the cameras would catch people using their phones or using facial recognition. But that’s not true.

These detectors are placed at busy junctions and crossings. They help monitor traffic and ensure everything runs smoothly.

One message incorrectly stated that cameras at Bennington Street and Queen’s Park Road would check for seatbelt use and phone violations.

The Blackburn with Darwen Council clarified that these are not cameras. They are pedestrian detectors to help manage traffic better.

A spokesperson explained that these devices are essential for the pedestrian facilities to work correctly. More detectors will appear as part of their upgrade plan.

In July, the council announced a £497,178 investment to modernize traffic signals at 57 locations. This funding comes from a government grant.

Blackburn has 86 traffic signal sites, including 58 junctions and 28 pedestrian crossings. Remember, using a phone while driving is illegal and can lead to fines.
