New Milton: The New Forest District Council (NFDC) is rolling out a new waste collection service in three phases. The first phase kicks off in June, starting with New Milton, Lymington, and nearby areas.

In this initial phase, each household will get two wheelie bins and caddies for recycling food waste. It’s a great way to help everyone get on board with recycling.

Then, in October, the second phase will cover the west and northwest parts of the New Forest, including places like Ringwood and Fordingbridge. It’s all about making sure more people can participate.

Finally, the last phase will launch in March 2026, reaching the east and northeast areas, including Totton and Hythe. It’s a well-planned rollout!

Residents in the first phase will receive a letter and leaflet explaining how the new service will work. Those in the later phases will get similar updates as their start dates approach.

The new service will include a black-lidded 180-litre bin for general waste, a green-lidded 240-litre bin for recycling, and both a brown outdoor caddy and a grey indoor caddy for food waste. You can check out examples of these bins at NFDC’s info offices in Lymington, Lyndhurst, New Milton, and Ringwood.

Recycling and rubbish will be collected on alternating weeks, with general waste one week and recycling the next. Food waste will be picked up weekly, which is super convenient.

To help everyone get started, an initial supply of caddy liners will be provided for food waste recycling. The council aims to make it easier for residents to recycle more and throw away less.

Residents can recycle a variety of food waste, including vegetable peelings, meat, fish, dairy, and even coffee grounds. Once collected, this food waste will be sent to an anaerobic digestion facility to be turned into renewable energy and fertilizer.

More details about using the new bins, delivery schedules, and any changes to collection days will be included in the letters and leaflets from NFDC. You can find out which phase you’re in by visiting their website.
