Residents are facing issues with new parking fees, especially with added charges from the RingGo app for using the service
Batley: At the beginning of the month, new parking fees were introduced in 15 car parks that used to be free. This change affects places like Birstall, Cleckheaton, and Holmfirth.
To park, folks can use the RingGo app or call in. There are also contactless meters at seven of these car parks, which is handy.
However, some users on social media are not happy. They’ve reported extra fees on top of the hourly rate. One person mentioned that while the first two hours are free, the app wanted to charge them 40p just for using it.
RingGo explained that if you park for more than the two free hours, there’s a 16p “convenience fee.” Plus, if you want to avoid extra charges, you need to opt out of text reminders. And if you just want the free parking, you still have to register your vehicle to avoid fines.
People are worried that this change is unfair, especially for those who might not have a smartphone or struggle with tech. It’s a real concern for many.
Councillor Martyn Bolt expressed his worries about the lack of clear communication from the council regarding these new charges. He pointed out that there was plenty of time to inform the public after the summer pause.
He also mentioned that while the council leader said you can pay by card, there’s confusion in places like Mirfield about how to use the system without RingGo or a smartphone.
Councillor Munir Ahmed, who oversees Environment and Highways, clarified that out of 57 council-owned car parks, 42 are still free. The rest offer two free hours before charges kick in, and only eight require a mobile phone for payment.
He reassured that payment can be made over the phone or through the RingGo app, and a smartphone isn’t necessary. He also mentioned that there are no extra fees for registering for the free parking.
Ahmed explained that the decision not to install ticket machines was based on the number of spaces available. He added that there are alternative parking options for those without mobile access.
They’re keeping an eye on how the new charges are affecting people and are open to feedback.
A RingGo spokesperson confirmed that the new zones were added in early January and that the 16p convenience fee applies when parking there. However, if you choose the two-hour free option, that fee doesn’t apply.
They also mentioned that this fee helps cover the service’s running costs and allows for new features. Sometimes, local authorities absorb this cost, but in other cases, it’s passed on to the motorist.
For those interested, the car parks with contactless meters include several locations in Batley and Cleckheaton, making it a bit easier for drivers.
