Newham secures permission to raise council tax by 8.99% to tackle financial strain from temporary housing costs affecting over 6,500 residents.
A council vote happens February 27th. It’s about raising council tax over 5%.
Councils need permission for big tax hikes. Newham asked the government for help. They have serious money issues right now. Temporary housing costs are a huge problem.
Over 6,500 residents live in temporary homes. This puts £100 million strain on their finances over the next three years. The mayor knows it’s tough on people.
The council doesn’t raise tax lightly, she said. They’ll still help those who need it most. An 80% tax cut is planned for some. Pensioners get a 90% tax cut.
They want to help low-income families. Newham has always had low council tax. Even with the increase, it’s still low. They are seventh lowest in London and the lowest in outer London overall.
Without housing and social care costs, they’d be fine. They await a decision on financial help. Newham has a big budget gap that could be £157 million by 2028. They need to save £32 million in 2025/26.
