The mayor’s plan for a booking system at Newlands Recycling Centre was turned down, leaving residents concerned about traffic issues.
Malvern: So, the mayor, Cllr Marilyn Birks, had this idea to set up a booking system at the Newlands Recycling Centre. She thought it would help with the long queues and safety issues. But guess what? The Worcestershire County Council said no after a meeting.
Cllr Birks pointed out that the site is pretty cramped, and cars often back up onto the A449, which is a real mess. Another councillor, Jude Green, echoed her worries, saying residents have been complaining about the traffic chaos. She’s worried there might be an accident soon since there have been a lot of close calls.
After her motion to get support for the booking system was shot down last November, Cllr Birks organized a site visit to see what could be done. Some council reps, including Councillor Emma Stokes, joined in to check things out.
During the visit, they talked about how the site operates with the folks from Severn Waste Services and County Highways. But in the end, Cllr Stokes said they all agreed that a booking system wasn’t needed. She mentioned that there hasn’t been any public demand for it either.
A spokesperson from Worcestershire County Council said they’re focused on keeping the recycling centres running smoothly for everyone in the area. Cllr Birks, however, wants to hear from local folks about what they think would work. She’s keen to find a way to stop cars from queuing for ages while waiting to get in.
She pointed out that the long lines make it tough for other traffic to get by at that busy junction, sometimes causing backups all the way into Malvern Link. Until they find a solution, it looks like this problem will stick around.
