Heads up, Newport! There are some important road and footpath closures coming up that you should be aware of.
Newport: There are some road and footpath closures happening soon, and it’s good to stay in the loop. These closures are mainly for construction and maintenance work, plus some safety upgrades.
Don’t worry too much about getting around, though. Most areas will still have pedestrian access, and there will be emergency routes available if needed.
St Cadoc’s Close, Caerleon
First up, we have a closure on footpath number 389/22/1 at St Cadoc’s Close in Caerleon. This is for building a new footway and cycleway.
The footpath will be closed starting January 20, 2025, and it should last no longer than six months. You can take an alternative route via Roman Way, Caradog Close, and College Glade.
City Centre, Newport
In the city centre, several roads will be closed temporarily for site investigations and installing new equipment. The good news is they won’t all close at once, so it should help reduce the hassle.
This closure kicks off on January 20, 2025, and will last for about 18 months or until the work is done. Roads affected include High Street, Market Street, Griffin Street, and Corn Street, along with parts of Upper Dock Street, Skinner Street, Bridge Street, Cambrian Road, Stow Hill, and Charles Street.
Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Footpaths
For those near the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Rogerstone, the temporary footpath closure order for 2024 has been extended. The Welsh ministers have given the green light to keep it closed until July 18, 2025, due to ongoing restoration work.
This affects footpaths 406/42/1, 406/42/3, 406/62/1, and 406/69/1 over a distance of 1.69 miles. You can use Pontymason Lane and Great Oaks Park as an alternative route.
