Get ready for a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration in Newport, featuring cultural festivities, workshops, and a lively procession
Newport: The city is gearing up for a fantastic Lunar New Year celebration. This year, it’s all about the Year of the Snake, and the excitement is building.
Last year’s event was a hit, drawing over 3,500 people to the city center. Pat Lin from the Newport Chinese Community Centre shared how great it was to have the festivities at the Riverfront.
Sally Evans from the Riverfront Theatre mentioned how much bigger the event was than they expected. It’s a wonderful chance to connect with different communities in Newport.
The Newport City Council, the Chinese Community Centre, and the Riverfront Theatre are teaming up again for this year’s celebrations. The fun kicks off with a lively procession led by Lion dancers, starting at Friars Walk at 10 am.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun, so don’t forget to bring your lanterns or wear something red! Ms. Lin mentioned they’ll be giving out red packets filled with sweets.
There’s also going to be a 50 ft green snake and an erhu player, showcasing traditional Chinese music. From 11 am to 4 pm, the Riverfront will host a variety of workshops, performances, and family-friendly activities.
Emma Corten from the Newport City Council expressed her excitement about supporting the Lunar New Year celebrations again. Last year’s event really brought the community together, and she can’t wait to see what’s planned this time.
This year’s theme is ‘The Snake Awakens,’ featuring Chinese crafts, a tea ceremony, calligraphy, and more. Plus, there will be a giant fire sculpture of a serpent and a captivating one-woman show about Mulan.
The UK Government is helping fund the celebration through the Shared Prosperity Fund, which supports cultural events and community engagement. It’s going to be a memorable day!
