Norfolk: The National Education Union (NEU) is sounding the alarm about a serious issue in local schools. They recently conducted a survey that revealed some shocking statistics about violence against teachers.

According to the survey, a staggering nine out of ten female teachers reported either experiencing violence or witnessing it happen to their colleagues. That’s just unacceptable!

The union pointed out that male students are often the ones targeting female staff, and a lot of this abuse is sexual. Can you believe that? Some teachers have had chairs thrown at them, been kicked, or even groped. It’s really concerning.

With these findings, the NEU is worried about a potential “mass exodus” of teachers if things don’t change soon. One idea they’re floating is to equip female teachers with body cameras, similar to what emergency workers use. This could help deter violence and provide evidence when incidents occur.

Scott Lyons, the NEU’s district secretary in Norfolk, mentioned that ten years ago, teachers would have been horrified at the thought of wearing body cameras. But now, many are saying they’d welcome it. That really shows how dire the situation has become.

He emphasized that the crisis is especially tough for women teachers. The survey, which got responses from 320 female teachers, found that over 60% experienced violence weekly. That’s just heartbreaking.

Interestingly, the nature of the abuse changes as students progress from primary to secondary school. In primary, it’s more physical, but in high school, it often turns sexual. One teacher even left her job after being sexually abused by a student. How did we get here?

Mr. Lyons is worried that if nothing is done, teachers might have to take industrial action to protect themselves. The survey also included some pretty disturbing anecdotes about the violence teachers face daily.

One teacher shared that they were kicked and stabbed with a pencil by a child. Another reported a fractured finger and bruises from a student stamping on their foot. It’s just awful to hear these stories.

The NEU is sharing these findings with education leaders in the area, hoping to spark some real change. Penny Carpenter from Norfolk County Council acknowledged the issues and said they’re working closely with schools to address them.

She stressed that teachers should be able to do their jobs without fear of violence. The council is already implementing measures to support staff and manage challenging behavior in schools. It’s a tough situation, but hopefully, with more awareness, things can improve.
