Norton Town Council held its first awards ceremony to honor local heroes, recognizing individuals and organizations for their contributions to the community.
Mayor Di Keal explained that the council aims to appreciate those who support others. Many people in Norton work hard but often go unnoticed. The council wants to change that.
During the ceremony, four awards were given out. Winners received plaques and certificates for their efforts.
The Charity of the Year award went to Norton Free Fridge. This group has helped around 5,000 people in five years by providing free food and reducing waste. They operate with volunteers who collect surplus food from local businesses.
Volunteer of the Year was awarded to David Hurley from The Hive. He has transformed their location into an eco-friendly space. David led a project to improve energy efficiency, making the building more sustainable.
The Unsung Hero of the Year award went to Sue Galley. She volunteers at Ryedale Community Foodbank, ensuring food is organized and available for clients. Her efforts are crucial for the Foodbank’s operations.
Masons Pet Supplies won for the best decorated shop window during Christmas. Their festive display impressed the judges and added cheer to the town.
Councillor Keal expressed gratitude to all winners and nominators. She hopes these awards will highlight the hard work of volunteers in Norton.
The town council plans to make these awards an annual event, looking forward to more nominations next year.
