A special Noson Lawen episode will celebrate Derek Williams’ life with tributes from friends and musical performances on February 8.
Luke’s tribute is part of a special Noson Lawen episode airing on February 8 at 7:30 PM. This show will celebrate Derek’s life and contributions.
The episode features Luke and other musical stars, opera singers, and Derek’s family. It will be compered by his children, Branwen Haf and Meilir Rhys.
Derek was a maths teacher and later a deputy head at Ysgol y Berwyn in Bala. He passed away suddenly in May 2014 at the age of 64.
Luke, one of Derek’s protégés, started his career at Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn. He expressed gratitude for Derek’s encouragement to join the theater.
Luke reminisced about his school days, saying he was a bit of a troublemaker. Derek would often tell him to channel his energy into something productive.
In the special episode, Luke performs “Dy Garu di o Bell,” a song written by Derek and others. This song holds special meaning for Luke as it was his first solo performance.
He shared a touching memory of surprising his mother when he sang the song. She was so surprised that she started crying.
Branwen, Derek’s daughter, feels honored to present this program about her father. She noted that his legacy continues to inspire many.
