A nurse was stabbed with scissors at Royal Oldham Hospital, leading to a court appearance for the suspect charged with attempted murder
Rumon Haque is facing serious charges, including attempted murder and having a bladed article. The attack happened on Saturday while Achamma Cherian was working in the hospital’s acute medical unit. She’s currently in the hospital, fighting for her life.
As of Tuesday, Greater Manchester Police confirmed that she’s still receiving treatment for her injuries. Haque, who is 37 and from Royton, appeared in court on Tuesday regarding the incident.
He didn’t enter a plea, and his lawyer mentioned there wouldn’t be a bail application. So, he’s been remanded in custody and is set to return to crown court in February. When asked to identify himself, he gave his name as “Mohammed Roman Haque” while wearing a grey sweatshirt and flanked by prison officers.
Achamma’s husband chose not to comment on the situation when approached. District Judge Jane Hamilton informed Haque that the attempted murder charge would be handled by the crown court, along with the possession charge. He’s due back in court on February 18.
Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from Greater Manchester Police expressed concern for the nurse and emphasized their commitment to supporting her, her family, and her colleagues during this tough time. Neighbors mentioned that Achamma and her husband have two children, highlighting the impact of this incident on their family.
