Ruth Gitau, a 16-year-old from Headington, shines in a charity single, proving that illness can’t dim her passion for music
Headington: Ruth Gitau, just 16, has been living with pulmonary hypertension and other breathing issues. But she’s not letting that stop her from pursuing her love for singing.
Despite what doctors said, she’s taken the lead on a national charity single with Rays of Sunshine, a charity that grants wishes to kids with serious illnesses.
The song, called ‘Rainbow’, comes from the Sunshine Choir, made up of young singers who’ve all faced tough health challenges. They’ve bonded over their love for music and shared experiences.
Ruth and her choir buddies wrote the song together, with help from musician Silvastone. The lyrics are all about their journeys and finding strength in tough times.
She got to record the single at Universal Music Group in London, which was a dream come true. Ruth shared, “It was an incredible experience, and I loved being part of the Sunshine Choir.”
She’s made great friends through the choir, and recording with Silvastone was a highlight. Ruth hopes listeners feel the same joy and hope that she and her friends do.
Ruth joined the Sunshine Choir after her wish for a bedroom makeover was granted back in 2017. Since then, she’s been a key part of the Rays of Sunshine community.
They released ‘Rainbow’ on January 20, known as Blue Monday, aiming to spread some positivity during a typically gloomy time of year.
Jenny Porter from Rays of Sunshine expressed pride in the choir’s work, saying, “Every member shared their story in the lyrics, and it was amazing to see their enthusiasm during recording.”
She added that ‘Rainbow’ is catchy and carries a heartfelt message, sure to brighten anyone’s day.
