Join the fun with the Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust’s new photography contest celebrating local wildlife and history
Greenham: The Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust has launched a photography competition that’s open to everyone. It’s all about celebrating the wildlife and history of Greenham and Crookham Commons.
Greenham Common is not just any spot; it has a fascinating past. It’s been a home for wildlife and served as common land for farming.
Plus, it has a rich history as an RAF airfield and a US Air Force base. Remember those peace camps during the Cold War? Yep, that happened here too!
In 2000, they opened the site to the public after clearing away a whopping 1.2 million tonnes of concrete and gravel from the old runway.
Serena Millen, the events manager at BBOWT, shared how the site is a safe haven for wildlife and a fantastic outdoor space for the community.
She added that this photography competition is a great chance to showcase the site’s history and wildlife, along with people’s memories of it. It’s all about inspiring what’s yet to come!
There are four categories to enter: kids aged six to 11, teens aged 12 to 17, wildlife, and history. The overall winner will snag a motion-activated trail camera!
Just a heads up, photos need to be taken at Greenham and Crookham Commons and submitted by February 28. Winners will be announced on April 8, so mark your calendars!
