A reader seeks information on Cpl Sippetts, a D-Day hero from Farnham
Trevor Bass is researching World War Two. He’s particularly interested in Sippetts, who lived at 2 Pharo’s Cottages, Upper Hale Road. Sippetts is remembered on the Aldershot war memorial.
Only one Victoria Cross was awarded for actions on D-Day. However, many other medals were given for bravery, including the Military Medal. Cpl Sippetts, from Farnham, served with the Hampshire Regiment.
The London Gazette from September 28, 1944, notes Sippetts’ gallant service. Sadly, it also mentions he was “since killed in action.” His bravery was highlighted during the assault at Le Hamel on June 6, 1944.
Sippetts led his platoon with great courage, clearing enemy posts. When his commander was injured, he took charge and led the team successfully. They captured a house despite taking casualties and took 12 prisoners.
The 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment played a key role on D-Day. They landed under heavy fire at Jig Green Beach, facing tough challenges. Despite this, they captured important positions and completed their objectives.
Sippetts was killed in action on June 13, 1944, just a week after D-Day. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, France. In 2001, his medals were auctioned for £6,000, revealing more about his service.
At just 28, Sippetts was already a veteran. He had fought in North Africa and Italy before D-Day. His medals included the Military Medal and several campaign medals for his service.
Trevor wonders if any descendants of Sippetts still live in Farnham. If you have any information about AEC Sippetts, please email [email protected]
