Piers Corbyn and nine others have been charged following a pro-Palestinian protest in London that led to multiple arrests
London: So, Piers Corbyn, you know, the brother of Jeremy Corbyn, got himself into some hot water recently. He and nine others were charged with public order offences after a pro-Palestinian protest in the city.
Things got a bit out of hand when the protesters were arrested for not following the rules set by the Metropolitan Police. They were supposed to keep it calm, but it seems that didn’t happen.
Thousands were planning to march past the BBC to voice their concerns about how the media was covering the Israel-Gaza conflict. But the police stepped in, worried about the march getting too close to a synagogue on the Sabbath.
Instead of marching, they agreed to hold a static rally in Whitehall. But then, on Saturday, over 70 people were arrested for allegedly breaking the conditions. Yikes!
The police were out in full force that day. Scotland Yard reported that ten of those arrested, including Corbyn, were charged and set to appear in court.
Alongside Corbyn, there were others like Christopher Nineham from the Stop the War Coalition and a mix of ages among those charged. It’s quite a diverse group!
While 24 people were bailed, 48 remained in custody. The police were clearly on high alert, and one commander mentioned that they saw a serious escalation in criminality during the protest.
Some officers even faced spitting and assaults, which is just awful. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign didn’t take it lightly either, calling the police response heavy-handed and aggressive.
