Transport Scotland has contracted WSP UK Limited for vital M8 repairs, aiming for completion by early 2026.
The project includes designing a permanent solution for the viaducts. These structures are essential for the M8, serving around 150,000 vehicles daily. The work is expected to finish by early 2026, but they hope to complete the eastbound lane by Summer 2025.
The costs have risen significantly. Initially, the project was estimated at £81.6 million. Now, it could range from £126 million to £152 million. This increase is due to delays and revised plans.
Inspections in 2021 revealed serious issues with the viaduct supports. Temporary measures were put in place to keep the road safe. Ongoing propping of the viaducts is necessary until permanent repairs are done.
Engineers began investigating the viaducts in late 2020. They found the supports were in worse shape than expected. This led to lane closures and speed limits on the M8 to allow for repairs.
The repair process involves excavating to foundation level and installing steel supports. Once the jacks are in place, repairs can be made, and the temporary supports will be removed.
