PM Keir Starmer had to abandon his personal email due to a Russian hack probe, raising security concerns about sensitive information.
London: PM Keir Starmer had to ditch his personal email account. This happened after security services looked into a suspected Russian hack.
Jill Cuthbertson, his office head, warned staff not to contact Starmer via email. This was back in 2022, showing serious security concerns.
Starmer changed his email address, which was reportedly “dangerously obvious.” He also added extra security checks to protect his information.
The hack occurred shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. While no emails were published, security services couldn’t confirm if sensitive data was stolen.
This incident coincided with other hacks, including those targeting British Eurosceptics. Over 20,000 emails were leaked online later.
Details about this situation came out in a book called Get In, which covers Starmer’s rise in politics. It was serialized in The Sunday Times.
Additionally, Liz Truss, the former Conservative prime minister, had her phone hacked while she was foreign secretary. This was discovered during the Tory leadership campaign but kept quiet.
