A new nightclub will open in Southwark, despite local opposition and past issues
Southwark: A new nightclub is set to open where a serious incident occurred last year. The venue was previously shut down after an alleged rape. Local councillors approved the new club, Vision Lounge, despite strong opposition from residents and police.
Club 701 was the last venue at this location. It lost its license in February 2024 due to the alleged incident. Residents have faced years of disturbances from previous clubs, including crime and noise issues.
Pip Hayman, a local resident, expressed concerns about the nightclub’s impact. He mentioned problems like drug use and noise at all hours. Residents worry about the return of food vendors and other disturbances when the club opens.
Local police also voiced concerns about the venue’s suitability. They highlighted the history of crime and anti-social behavior linked to past clubs. The council’s licensing team noted that managing this property has been challenging for years.
Eddie Hanson, the club’s owner, has invested significantly in the project. He claims to have 20 years of experience in nightlife and wants to work with neighbors. Councillors expressed faith in his ability to manage the venue responsibly.
After the meeting, Pip Hayman shared his disappointment with the decision. He questioned what more could be done to show that this license shouldn’t be granted.
