Gareth Gates will sing at the Wyvern Theatre on March 20, showcasing love songs from movies with a live band and West End cast.
Gareth became famous as the runner-up on Pop Idol in 2002. He’s excited to perform at what he calls his “local theatre.” He has a family connection to the area.
He shared, “I’ve performed at the Wyvern a few times. It’s a great venue where the audience feels very close.” Gareth feels a strong bond with Swindon. His daughter goes to school nearby.
He added, “I have an apartment near her school. I stayed here during lockdown, so I know Swindon very well. Performing here is a real thrill.”
Gareth’s daughter will be in the audience. He’s even thinking about inviting her on stage to sing. “We’ll see,” he said.
Since Pop Idol, Gareth has sold millions of records and starred in shows like Les Miserables and Legally Blonde. His new show features famous ballads from movies, backed by a live band and West End cast.
He explained, “My first number one was Unchained Melody from Ghost. I thought, why not create a show with all these amazing songs?” The performance will include hits from Titanic, Dirty Dancing, and more.
Gareth is also working on a musical called “Speechless.” It’s inspired by his experiences with bullying due to his stammer. He wrote eight songs for it during lockdown.
“I’m excited to educate people about stammers,” he said. “Writing a West End show is a dream come true.”
After two decades in the spotlight, Gareth is still eager to perform in Swindon next month. “Being part of Pop Idol was incredible. I loved every minute of it, and I’m still busy as ever!”
