A special prom for kids with learning disabilities is happening soon, ensuring they can celebrate their achievements in style and comfort
Stoford: Laura Tween, a dedicated mum, is putting together a prom for kids who usually miss out on the traditional school celebrations. She wants to make sure every child gets to celebrate finishing their education.
This event is set for June, and it’s open to kids aged 14 to 17 at Little Wishford Farm. It’s a chance for them to enjoy a prom experience that they might not normally have.
Laura knows firsthand how tough it can be. Her own child has autism and is currently out of school due to some trauma. She understands that for some kids, the anxiety of school can mean missing out on big events like prom.
She believes prom is a big deal, a celebration of all the hard work kids put in, no matter their circumstances. Laura herself didn’t have the best experience in school, so she’s determined to create a welcoming space for all kids.
They’ve got a marquee set up, and local businesses are pitching in. There will be hairdressing services, a quiet session for picking out dresses, and even supercars for some cool photos!
Plus, there will be food, a silent disco, and they’re on the lookout for a makeup artist. The best part? Everything is included in the ticket price of just £30.
Laura emphasizes that it’s all about comfort. If a kid wants to wear pajamas instead of a dress, that’s totally fine! It’s their prom, and they should feel free to express themselves however they want.
Each child can bring two friends and must have a parent with them. The prom is on June 6, but there’s also a ball for adults with learning disabilities on June 5, and an open event for everyone on June 7.
Laura is part of Able Hands Together, a service that supports people with learning disabilities. They’re looking for volunteers and ideas for the prom, so anyone interested can reach out to her at ltween@ablehandstogether.org.uk. Tickets will be available soon!
