A Nelson teen faces serious charges after a tragic incident led to a woman’s death, with a trial date set for June
Nelson: A 19-year-old named Abubakar Mahmood appeared in court recently but didn’t enter a plea. He’s facing some serious charges after a tragic accident.
The court has set a provisional trial date for June 15, but there’s a chance a plea hearing could happen before then. The next court date is on March 25 for more case management.
Mahmood is charged with causing death by dangerous driving. This stems from an incident where 51-year-old Safia Karieem was hit by his Volkswagen Golf on December 15.
After the accident, Safia’s daughters shared heartfelt tributes, saying she was a caring person who dedicated her life to helping others. They expressed how her sudden loss has left a huge gap in their lives.
Following the incident, police made several arrests, including a 19-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old boy, all suspected of being involved in the dangerous driving. A 30-year-old man was also arrested for allegedly helping an offender.
