Halifax and Lloyds are closing 136 branches in the UK, sparking mixed reactions from customers about the shift to online banking.
The Halifax branch on High Street in Mold will close on October 16, 2025. Rhyl will also see a closure, making a total of six branches shutting down in Wales.
A Halifax spokesperson explained that many customers now prefer online banking. They said, “Most customers are using our Mobile Banking app or calling us instead.” This shift means fewer people visit branches.
Readers on Facebook shared their thoughts about the closures. Colin Davies mentioned that his app does everything he needs, questioning the need for a branch.
Andrew Williams expressed sadness but wasn’t surprised, saying, “There won’t be many high street banks left soon.”
Stephen Wilkes was unhappy with the news, calling it “disgusting” and worried about losing cash options.
Many commenters noted a generational divide. Younger adults support online banking, while older folks prefer visiting a branch for help.
Rachel McKendrick, 34, said she only visited her local bank to set up her account. Since then, she uses the app or calls.
Bobby Owens, 26, felt the closures were expected. He said, “Apps are easy to use, and we don’t need as many branches anymore.”
Another reader disagreed, emphasizing the importance of physical branches for older customers.
To reassure customers, a Lloyds spokesperson mentioned that people can still use telephone banking or visit community bankers. They also highlighted access to over 11,000 Post Office branches for everyday banking needs.
