Residents in Bitterne celebrate as recycling bins are finally emptied after weeks of overflow
Bitterne: Residents were frustrated with overflowing recycling bins. Many had to toss recyclables into general waste bins. This was not ideal, but they felt they had no choice.
Yesterday, the city council finally emptied the bins after the Daily Echo got involved. They removed all the cardboard and plastic that had piled up.
A council spokesperson explained that the bins were not emptied earlier due to contamination. They said they needed the right resources and vehicles to handle the situation.
Steve Lake, a local resident, expressed relief but questioned if this would happen again. He mentioned they hadn’t seen a collection since December 12.
Residents had been contacting the council, but their complaints seemed ignored. They were often told, “it’ll be done tomorrow,” but nothing happened.
Many residents took to social media to share their frustrations. They pointed out the overflowing bins and the mess it created. One person noted that they had to put recycling in the general waste bin, which limited space for actual rubbish.
Some properties in the area are managed by the Clarion Housing Group. They acknowledged the concerns and were working with the city council to resolve the issue.
Before the bins were emptied, Clarion mentioned they were seeking help from a private contractor to manage overflowing waste.
