The roof of the former Rackham’s is set for repairs after years of neglect, with plans to restore the building for new commercial use.
North Yorkshire: Last April, permission was granted to split 31 to 41 High Street into four shops. The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Peacocks, and Bonmarche will occupy three of those units. The former department store has been vacant since 2019.
Equorium Property is handling the renovations. They received approval from North Yorkshire Council to repair the roof. This work includes using Welsh slates, fixing gutters, and adding loft insulation.
A planning officer’s report noted that these repairs are necessary after years of poor maintenance. The goal is to make the building usable again. These repairs are part of a larger plan to create three commercial units.
The report also mentioned that the repairs would improve the building’s appearance and benefit the conservation area. Bringing the building back into use is a positive step for the community.
Peacocks focuses on fast fashion, while Bonmarche offers stylish and affordable clothing options.
