Recent images reveal significant progress in the repairs of the Merthyr Tydfil sinkhole, which gained international attention.
Merthyr Tydfil: A massive sinkhole opened up on a street, grabbing headlines everywhere. It was one of the largest sinkholes in Wales, swallowing part of a road and even a driveway belonging to Love Island star Liam Reardon during Storm Bert on December 1.
This thing was so big that even Fox News in the U.S. reported on it, saying it could fit double-decker buses! Over a few days, it grew to a shocking 40 feet deep. If you want to keep up with the latest news from Merthyr Tydfil, you can sign up for their newsletter.
Contractors jumped into action to secure the area temporarily while they figured out a long-term solution. We chatted with Paul Edwards, a civil engineer from Edwards Diving Services, who helped make the site safe. He mentioned that the permanent repairs would kick off in January and are expected to last at least 100 years.
On January 9, a spokesperson from the Merthyr Tydfil council confirmed that the permanent work is now in full swing. Photographer Richard Swingler went out on Saturday to snap some photos of the progress. It’s pretty impressive to see how far they’ve come!
