Residents of Thamesmead’s Lesnes Estate feel abandoned as regeneration plans drag on, leaving them in unsafe and unsanitary conditions
Thamesmead: It’s a tough situation for folks living on the Lesnes Estate. Many feel like they’ve been forgotten, stuck next to boarded-up houses. The place is crawling with cockroaches and mice, and it’s just not safe anymore.
This estate, once buzzing with life, has turned into a ghost town. Only about a quarter of the original residents are still around. The council had plans to replace the old homes with new ones, but everything’s come to a standstill.
Rose, who’s been there for 17 years, described it as a “horrible nightmare.” She misses the days when the community was lively and friendly. Now, it feels more like “hell on earth.”
Maria, another long-time resident, shared her fears. She’s seen fights break out and even heard gunshots. It’s heartbreaking to see her neighborhood change so drastically.
People used to gather, cook, and share meals together. Now, they just want to be part of the regeneration and enjoy the new transport links that have been built nearby.
But instead of feeling safe, they’re left feeling anxious and neglected. Rubbish is piling up, and the area is becoming increasingly unsafe. Maria even had to call the police multiple times due to violence in the area.
Residents have voiced their concerns to the Mayor, hoping for some action. They handed over a petition asking for help to move the regeneration forward. It’s been a long wait, and they’re feeling the strain.
Peabody, the housing association in charge, insists they’re working hard to improve things. They say they’re in touch with residents and are trying to keep the estate clean. But for those living there, it often feels like empty promises.
It’s a tough spot for everyone involved, and the residents just want to see some real change happen soon.
