York: There’s been a lot of chatter about parking issues in the Huntington Road area. Residents are feeling the squeeze as more commuters and visitors park in their streets.

At a recent City of York Council meeting, folks shared their frustrations. They mentioned how tough it’s become to find a spot, especially with all the traffic from the Joseph Rowntree Theatre and nearby schools.

One resident, William Owen, raised a valid point. He noted that only about a quarter of homes had responded to a previous consultation about the parking plans. He’s not keen on restrictions if not everyone’s on board.

After some back and forth, the council decided to formally consult affected households about the proposed parking restrictions. This follows two petitions from locals back in 2019 and 2020.

Interestingly, while most who responded to a later consultation were in favor, only 63 out of 267 households actually participated. That’s a pretty low turnout!

Residents pointed out that the high number of student houses and short-term rentals might be keeping participation down. Emily Green, a local paramedic, expressed her worries about parking. She mentioned students often leave their cars parked for ages, making it hard for others to find a spot.

Lindsey Walter, who lives on Haleys Terrace, shared a heartbreaking story. She said parking issues got so bad that a neighbor with a newborn had to move out because she couldn’t find anywhere to park.

On the flip side, Dr. Owen from Oakville Street disagreed. He feels there’s always a spot available where he lives and doesn’t want any changes that might affect his parking situation.

Council Transport Executive Member Cllr Kate Ravilious acknowledged the growing parking problems, even with the low turnout in the past. She promised to work with local councillors to boost participation in the upcoming consultation.
