Chelsea: The Crouch End Festival Chorus performed at Holy Trinity Church. The setting was beautiful, and the program was diverse and ambitious. They sang both a cappella and with a string quartet.

The concert featured seven modern pieces. Conductor David Temple noted that five composers were still alive. One highlight was Jacob Collier’s “World O World.” Paul Patterson enjoyed his piece “Time Pieces,” which was lively and humorous.

Next, they performed Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres,” which was both calming and unsettling. The Chamber Players string quartet added style to the performance. After intermission, the lights dimmed for Taverner’s “Prayer of the Heart.” Soloists were placed around the nave, creating a spiritual atmosphere.

Grace-Evageline Mason was also present, showcasing her work “Memory of the Ocean.” This piece was inspired by Vaughan Williams and featured evocative lyrics. The concert opened and closed with significant pieces, including one by Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva.

David’s Psalm had a powerful message, ending with the words, “I will not fear a host of people around attacking me.” The chorus also performed Samuel Barber’s “Agnus Dei,” known as a national anthem of mourning in the U.S. Recent events made it a fitting choice.

The evening concluded with Collier’s “World O World,” which felt like a traditional hymn. The audience left happy, braving the cold Chelsea night.
