Many folks vanish in Kent each year. Most return home safely. Some never do. Families are left with unanswered questions. Nicola Jordan explores a case from sixteen years past.

Richard Lambert was last seen sixteen years ago. He went out with friends one Friday night. His girlfriend joined them. They had a row. Richard drove home to Chatham early morning in his special Ford Fiesta. Afterward, he left again. Nobody has seen him since.

Richard was nineteen. His rare black and white car was one of only 500. The car also vanished. A teddy bear was found near his house. People thought his girlfriend gave it to him. Police searched everywhere, with border control and European authorities joining the search. They found nothing.

Police tracked his car using cameras, but only in Medway. People thought they saw him elsewhere. Some sightings were in Kent, like Folkestone. Others were farther, in Essex, Wiltshire, and Wales. Each lead was checked, but all proved wrong.

Was Richard running away from something? Was he in trouble? No one knows. His phone was off. He used no bank cards. His parents and friend asked for help at press events. Pictures of his car and the teddy were shown. They hoped someone would remember.

A detective called it a puzzling case. Another detective, Laura Pallett, recalls the report on June 15, 2009. This was two days after his night out. Police spoke to Richard’s family first. They also talked to those who last saw him and checked his bank and car.

Police searched houses and checked CCTV. They looked at his phone records and launched media appeals often. Richard’s family helped a lot, contacting his friends and speaking to people he knew. Police stayed in touch with the family.

Police say the case is still open and want anyone with information to call. Two years after he vanished, his dad spoke, asking Richard to get in touch and saying they missed him greatly. The family wanted to know he was okay.

People often asked the family for news; even his old mechanics were confused. His dad said it was a total mystery. Richard had money, but his accounts were untouched. Only direct debits were paid right after he disappeared. His dad hoped he was safe and that Richard could look after himself.

Richard’s description: white, 5’9′′, stocky build, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He wore a McKenzie t-shirt last. His car’s license plate was EY09 YST.
