Robert Fort is on a mission to raise funds for Manorlands by climbing Mera Peak, inspired by his late wife’s care at the hospice.
Oxenhope: Robert Fort is gearing up for an exciting challenge. He’s set to climb Mera Peak in Nepal, which stands at a whopping 21,000 feet, all to raise funds for Manorlands hospice.
This journey is especially meaningful for him. His wife, Alison, spent her last days at the hospice, and he wants to give back for the amazing care they received.
Robert recalls the shock of Alison’s late-stage bowel cancer diagnosis in 2022. They were living life to the fullest, enjoying hikes and wild swims, when everything changed.
Alison passed away two years ago, and Robert is determined to honor her memory. He’s no stranger to fundraising, having organized bike rides and even a tough 46-mile walk that raised over £20,000.
Now, he’s taking it up a notch with this climb. He and Alison loved exploring the outdoors together, trekking in places like the Himalayas and Andes.
Robert shares, “I don’t want to just sit at home. Alison wouldn’t have wanted that either.” A friend suggested Mera Peak as a great goal for someone his age, and he’s been training hard.
He’s been doing weekly walks of 10 to 12 miles, sometimes with climbing, to stay fit. While he feels a bit nervous, he’s excited to return to the stunning Himalayas.
He’s already raised over half of his £1,500 target on his fundraising page. Manorlands is vital for supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses, and it costs a lot to keep the hospice running.
Every bit helps, and Robert is ready to make a difference while honoring his beloved wife.
