Roger Saul will lead a panel discussing food security challenges at the upcoming Sustainable Foods 2025 Event in London
London: Roger Saul, the founder of Mulberry and an organic farmer, is gearing up to moderate a panel at the Sustainable Foods 2025 Event. He’ll be chatting about some pretty important topics like food security and how supermarkets impact what we eat.
This event is happening on January 28 and 29 at the Business Design Centre. The panel discussion on UK food security is set for January 28 at noon, so mark your calendars!
Roger’s got some serious insights to share. He pointed out that empty supermarket shelves in 2023, thanks to flooding in Spain, really showed how fragile the UK’s food supply chain can be. Staples like tomatoes and cucumbers just vanished.
He also mentioned that issues like farmers’ inheritance tax, rising obesity rates, and poor crop yields are raising big questions about whether the UK is heading for a food crisis.
With 42% of the UK’s food coming from imports, the situation is getting tricky. Most of these imports are from Europe, and years of cheap food policies have left the system vulnerable.
Roger stressed that with all the challenges we face—geopolitical issues, climate change, and rising costs—it’s clear we need to act fast.
He believes that the solution lies in everyone working together: the government, landowners, supermarkets, and consumers. It’s all about food security, and he’s not shy about saying it’s a pressing issue.
“We need to rethink how we produce and value our food,” Roger said. It’s not just about eating; it’s about being resilient and sustainable as a nation.
