Ruby, a rescued dog, has transformed into a therapy dog, bringing joy to many
Winchester: Ruby, a German shepherd cross collie, was rescued in December 2022. The RSPCA stepped in due to concerns about her welfare.
She was taken to the RSPCA West Hatch Animal Centre in Somerset. Ruby was underweight and had been left alone for long periods.
When she arrived, Ruby was nervous and didn’t like being touched. She had little exposure to the outside world but quickly began to open up.
Despite her insecurities, Ruby was energetic and eager to please. The RSPCA knew she needed a home with plenty of exercise and training.
Deborah Smith from Winchester wanted a companion for her older dog, Alfie. She had always dreamed of getting involved in pet therapy.
After nine months of hard work, Ruby became a therapy dog. Deborah was drawn to Ruby right away, despite her anxiety.
Deborah and her partner took Ruby home in April 2023. After their separation, Deborah decided to keep Ruby, knowing she had the time to train her.
At 66, Deborah pursued her dream of becoming a therapy dog team. She started training with Therapy Dog Training UK.
In December 2024, they passed their assessment. Deborah is proud of Ruby, calling her a loyal and loving dog.
They hope to help people in their community. Two local nursing homes are interested in having Ruby visit their elderly residents.
Deborah also wants Ruby to assist with a school reading program. She believes Ruby can help children build confidence in their reading skills.
