Local councillors are urging Sainsbury’s customers to report shoplifting incidents for safety.
Glasgow: Shoppers feel intimidated after incidents at the Sainsbury’s store in Muirend. Local councillors are calling for a security guard to help. They want to make the store safer for everyone.
The supermarket is located on the border of Glasgow and East Renfrewshire. Councillor Katie Pragnell asked police for advice on how to keep visitors safe during a recent meeting.
This request followed letters from two Labour councillors, John Carson and Catherine Vallis. They wrote to Sainsbury’s chief executive about shoplifting incidents that happened in December.
Cllr Pragnell mentioned that her constituents in Clarkston, Netherlee, and Williamwood feel “a bit wary” after the raids. Many residents have emailed her with concerns, especially those living nearby.
She asked police what actions they are taking and how customers can ensure their safety while shopping.
Chief Inspector Gillian Faulds, the local area commander, said her team is aware of the shoplifting incidents. They regularly patrol various supermarkets in the area.
She noted that some supermarkets have been targeted more than others. There are also issues with youth disorder in the area.
Chief Inspector Faulds encouraged shoppers to report any incidents. Reporting helps the police understand the problem and allows them to increase patrols.
She emphasized the importance of working with supermarket security teams to address these issues effectively.
Cllrs Carson and Vallis reported that masked individuals have been involved in repeated shoplifting incidents. They believe a security guard could help deter future crimes and restore community confidence.
Sainsbury’s stated that customer and staff safety is their top priority and that they are collaborating with Police Scotland.
