A former school in Angus will be transformed into a home and self-storage site, with plans approved for residential use and seasonal staff accommodation.
Angus: A former school is set to be converted into a home and self-storage site. The Glen Lethnot Primary School closed in 2018 after the last students left in 2009. Now, plans to turn the Victorian building into a four-bedroom house have been approved.
The school annexe will also be transformed into accommodation for seasonal staff at Hunthill Estate. Tillybardine Farms submitted this proposal in October 2024. The annexe will mainly serve staff from July to September for land management and estate activities.
The council approved the change of use, stating it would maintain the property’s character while allowing it to be functional again. This is a positive step for the community and the building’s future.
Strathmartine House Appeal Rejected
In another development, an appeal to build a new house near Strathmartine has been denied. The application for land at Gallowhill was rejected last October due to national planning rules regarding new homes in rural areas.
Planning officials noted that the garden was too large for a garden but too small for agricultural use. The appeal was unanimously rejected, emphasizing the strict guidelines in place.
Arbroath Self-Storage Site
Blue Block Storage is looking to renew permission for a self-storage site in Arbroath. They previously received approval for 50 containers on vacant land at Baden Powell Road in 2019, but that approval has now lapsed.
The company has submitted a new application and hopes to start work later this year. Initially, they plan to set up 10 containers, with plans to expand to 50 if successful. The site will also store caravans, boats, and trailers.
Glen Isla Glamping
A proposal has been made for a glamping pod in Glen Isla. The applicants want to create a retreat at Viewmount, Bellaty, set in woodland off the B951, about 11 miles from Kirriemuir.
The one-bedroom pod will include parking and cycle storage. Research suggests this development could boost the local tourism economy by nearly £90,000 annually, attracting visitors to the Angus Glens and nearby attractions.
Forfar Family Home Application
Approval is being sought for a new two-storey house in Forfar. It will be built behind properties on East High Street, with a garage being demolished for parking space.
The new house will feature an open-plan kitchen and living area, a master bedroom with an en suite, and two additional bedrooms on the upper level. This development aims to enhance the area and provide more housing options.
