Scottish Water workers are considering strike action due to unsatisfactory pay offers and management’s hefty bonuses, raising concerns about service disruptions.
Edinburgh: So, it looks like Scottish Water staff are pretty fed up. The union, Unite, is saying that the company hasn’t offered a fair pay deal. Meanwhile, the bosses are raking in some serious cash. It’s a bit of a slap in the face, right?
They also mentioned a messed-up job evaluation process that’s left some workers feeling downgraded. That’s just not cool. Unite represents around 500 workers, including those who deal with waste water and maintenance. If they go on strike, it could really mess with how Scottish Water handles leaks and flooding.
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, didn’t hold back. She pointed out the huge bonuses for the management while the workers are left with a basic pay offer of just 3.4%. That was shot down by the members, and even a little extra £200 didn’t cut it. They want something better.
Sam Ritchie, an industrial officer with Unite, echoed the frustration. He said the execs seem more focused on their bonuses than on giving the workers a decent pay raise. It’s no wonder they’re considering a vote for industrial action. They’re tired of being ignored.
And get this: Scottish Water really relies on its workers doing overtime. If they stop, the company might have to shell out a lot more cash to contractors to get things done. A spokesperson for Scottish Water said they’re disappointed the unions haven’t shared their new offer with the members yet. They think it’s too soon to talk about strikes.
