As Trump begins his second term, the royal family plans to strengthen ties with him, leveraging his fondness for the monarchy.
London: The royal family is gearing up to play a big role in keeping the UK’s close ties with the US as Donald Trump kicks off his second term. It’s no secret that Trump has a soft spot for the monarchy. He’s often talked about his “automatic chemistry” with the late Queen and has praised King Charles as a “really wonderful guy.”
With Trump taking office again, the Labour government seems ready to take advantage of his fondness for the royals. They’re planning for senior royals to visit the US soon. A UK government source mentioned that Trump has a strong connection with the royal family, especially after his good rapport with the late Queen and his recent meeting with Prince William.
There’s talk that this royal tour could line up with the 250th anniversary of American independence, which falls between Memorial Day in May 2025 and July 4, 2026. That would be a great way to celebrate and reinforce the “special relationship.”
Trump has hinted at inviting world leaders to the celebrations, but he hasn’t revealed any names yet. The late Queen was a guest at the US’s 200th anniversary back in 1976, so it would be fitting for the royals to be involved again.
Another potential visit could be during the 2026 World Cup, which the US will host with Mexico and Canada. Since Trump is a big football fan, it could be a perfect chance for Prince William to catch up with him again.
After winning the election, Trump met Prince William at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. He even complimented the Prince, saying he looked great in person. It seems like they hit it off!
Meanwhile, the Labour Party is trying to use the royal family’s charm to build a good relationship with Trump. A diplomat mentioned that they see the royals as a bridge to connect with him, especially since Starmer can’t rely on Farage.
Trump has always been a frequent visitor to the UK, enjoying a state visit in 2019 where he attended a banquet at Buckingham Palace hosted by the late Queen. He’s often expressed his admiration for her, claiming they had a special bond.
However, a new biography suggests that the Queen found Trump a bit rude at times. It’s said she didn’t appreciate how he would look over her shoulder, seemingly searching for someone more interesting to talk to.
Trump and King Charles have met several times, but not since Charles became king in 2022. Still, they seem to be on friendly terms. Melania Trump mentioned in her memoir that they still exchange letters with King Charles, keeping that royal connection alive.
