Simon Harris and Hilary Benn had a friendly chat about key issues, including the Legacy Act and cooperation between their governments.
Dublin: On his first day as Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris had a nice chat with Hilary Benn. They talked about some important topics, like the Legacy Act and the new Irish Government’s commitments.
Harris, who was taoiseach until recently, invited Benn to visit Dublin. He mentioned how their conversation was warm and engaging, which is always a good sign.
They both agreed that their governments play a crucial role in supporting the Good Friday Agreement. Harris emphasized their commitment to work together on this shared responsibility.
He also pointed out that the relationship between their governments is better than it has been in years, thanks to some recent efforts to reset things. Northern Ireland is central to this relationship.
They discussed the ongoing work to repeal and replace the UK Legacy Act. Harris shared the new government’s commitments, focusing on a victim-centered approach that respects families’ voices.
Harris mentioned the Shared Island initiative and how they can cooperate closely on that front. He’s looking forward to hosting Benn in Dublin soon.
Benn last visited Dublin in December, where he met with former Tanaiste Micheal Martin. Harris stepped into his new role after Martin became Taoiseach, following a parliamentary vote.
There was a bit of a hiccup with the nomination process due to some disputes, but everything got sorted out, and Martin was officially sworn in with his family at the President’s residence.
