Wessex Water announces significant water bill increases for Somerset residents through 2029/30
Somerset: Wessex Water, the local water supplier, is raising bills. This change affects 15 suppliers across the UK. The increase will last until 2029/30.
The average water bill in the UK is £603. However, Somerset residents currently pay £508 annually. Starting in April, this will rise to £575, then to £614 by 2029/30.
This means a 21% increase from 2024/2025. Households in England and Wales will see an average rise of £123 a year. Most people can’t choose their water supplier.
SES Water is the only supplier not raising prices. They will lower their bill from £221 to £215 by 2029/30. Somerset residents will see their bills change as follows:
- £508 bill for 2024/2025
- £575 bill starting April 2025 – a 13% increase
- £614 bill for 2029/2030 – a 21% increase from 2024/25
This increase is larger than expected. Ofwat says it helps fund a £104 billion upgrade for better services and environmental improvements.
In December 2024, the government announced plans to increase compensation for households when issues arise. For example, payments for low water pressure will rise from £25 to £250.
A Wessex Water spokesperson mentioned they understand the impact of these increases. They offer support like flexible payment plans and debt assistance.
They are also investing in projects to reduce storm overflow use and improve water management.
