Southend Airport has transformed from near collapse to a thriving hub with new routes and investments
Southend: The airport faced tough times during the pandemic. Routes were cut, easyJet closed its base, and flights stopped completely.
But things have changed for the better. The airport has seen a strong recovery.
New routes to beach destinations like Malta are now available. There’s been a lot of investment, including a new easyJet base and upgraded passenger facilities.
Airport leaders are eager to expand. They want the government to help increase capacity at London’s airports.
Mike Steptoe, a local councillor, believes Southend can help ease congestion at Heathrow and Gatwick. He sees great potential for the community.
He’s impressed with how easy it is to use the airport. Passenger numbers dropped drastically during the pandemic, from 2.1 million in 2019-20 to just 90,000 in 2021-22.
The airport suffered a £21.5 million loss due to the decline in travelers. However, management has worked hard to improve facilities and attract investment.
Last May, The Carlyle Group took over the airport. They plan to boost annual passenger numbers to 10 million.
easyJet will reopen its base in March, adding new routes and creating 130 jobs. Passengers can look forward to 18 destinations, including Malta and Switzerland.
Additionally, internal flights to Newquay in Cornwall will start in April with Eastern Airways.
