The Clifftown Conservation Society receives £32,000 to restore Southend’s historic bowling green, with plans for further funding.
Southend: The Clifftown Conservation Society just got £32,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This money will help restore the historic bowling green.
They plan to apply for a bigger grant of £491,000 later. The project aims to finish by July 2026.
They’ll repair the walls, restore the original gates, and put back the railings. A wildflower and reflective garden will also be added to boost biodiversity.
To celebrate Clifftown’s heritage, there will be a photographic exhibition and a permanent display. This bowling green is one of the last two gardens from the Victorian Clifftown estate.
It has been a key part of the community for many years. Laura Khan, the chairperson, expressed excitement about the funding. She said it’s a great opportunity for everyone connected to the bowling green.
With the bowling green’s 100th anniversary coming in 2025, they are thankful for the support from the National Lottery players. They see this as a chance to revitalize the green for future generations.
Joe Scotland, the director, mentioned that the project honors the past while looking to the future. It aims to blend tradition with innovation, creating a space that reflects history and strengthens the community.
This announcement aligns with Heritage Treasures Day, celebrating heritage saved for communities across the UK thanks to National Lottery funding over the past 30 years.
The Clifftown Conservation Society hopes this project will create a meaningful space for the community.
