The Blue Plaque for Stock Aitken Waterman honors local music history in Southwark
Southwark: Last week, a Blue Plaque was unveiled for Stock Aitken Waterman. This plaque honors their impact on local music history.
Thanks to readers of Southwark News, the famous trio received this recognition at their old Vine Yard studio. They created many hits from 1984 to 1993.
During that time, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman sold over 200 million records. They worked with stars like Kylie Minogue and Rick Astley.
On January 22, fans gathered outside The Hit Factory to celebrate their legacy. This plaque was chosen by the community, showing the power of local voices.
The Southwark Blue Plaque scheme is a partnership between Southwark News, the council, and local heritage groups. It highlights those who shaped the borough.
Many deserving figures often go unrecognized due to strict criteria. This community-driven scheme allows Southwark residents to decide who should be honored.
Much of Southwark’s history was lost during the Blitz and redevelopment. The Blue Plaque scheme helps ensure that important contributions are remembered.
Now, there are 54 plaques across the borough. They celebrate figures like Michael Caine and Charles Dickens, reminding us that history belongs to everyone.
If you know someone or a place that deserves recognition, consider nominating them. This is your chance to help shape Southwark’s history.
