Invergarry: SSE is moving forward with its Great Glen hydro project. They submitted plans for the Loch Fearna pumped storage scheme. This project aims to build two dams to hold a massive 40 million cubic litres of water.

The project is one of the largest pumped storage hydro schemes in the UK. It will have a generating capacity of up to 2000 MW. The upper and lower reservoirs will be near the Quoich Dam, which is already a hydropower site.

A powerhouse will be built on the banks of Loch Quoich. This will house the pump-turbine units and other equipment. The two dams, Fearna Dam and Coire Dubh Dam, will help store water between 538 and 600 metres.

The dams will be made from rock excavated from nearby sites. They will look similar to the existing Quoich Dam. The powerhouse will be located in a former quarry, featuring deep vertical shafts for the pump-turbine units.

The project must consider several environmental designations. It is near the West Inverness-shire Lochs Special Protection Area, which protects certain bird species. It is also close to the Knoydart National Scenic Area and the Kinlochhourn-Knoydart-Morar Wild Land Area.

Additionally, the development is within the Moidart, Morar, and Glenshiel Special Landscape Area. Glen Affric National Nature Reserve is about 19 km away, and the historic Glenshiel battlefield is 6 km to the north.

The project is not expected to affect trees or woodlands. However, it may disturb carbon-rich soils and peatland. The site is part of the Interlocking Sweeping Peaks landscape character type.

So far, two consultation events have been held. The first was on December 6, 2023, and the second on December 10, 2024, at Glengarry Community Hall. Local councils and MSPs have been informed about the proposals.

Councillors will gather relevant information while the full application is prepared.
