Get ready for a night of beautiful music at St Swithun’s Church with the West Dorset Singers performing classic choral pieces
North Allington: The West Dorset Singers are gearing up for a special concert at St Swithun’s Church. They’ll be performing Mendelssohn’s ‘Hymn of Praise’ to mark the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s printing press, which is pretty cool.
This piece dives into themes of moving from darkness to light, celebrating God with a lot of enthusiasm. It’s a beautiful way to honor such an important milestone.
Then there’s Parry, who’s famous for ‘Jerusalem’. He really shaped English choral music. His piece, ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’, uses poetry from John Milton. It reflects on the perfect blend of music and words that was lost due to human flaws.
It also looks ahead to a time when we’ll be reunited with God in Heaven. A spokesperson shared some interesting thoughts about Milton and Poulenc, highlighting their different views on faith and life.
They mentioned how Poulenc’s music swings between lively and solemn, mirroring his own struggles. It’s a fascinating take on how music can reflect our journeys.
If you’re interested, tickets are just £15, and under 18s can attend for free. The concert starts at 7pm, and you can grab tickets from Goadsby on South Street. It sounds like a lovely evening!
