Labour voters are urging Starmer to prioritize EU relations over Trump as worries grow about his presidency’s impact
London: Keir Starmer is getting some serious advice not to get too chummy with the White House. A recent poll shows that a whopping 67% of Labour voters want him to focus on building stronger ties with Europe, especially with Donald Trump back in the picture.
Many folks are worried about what Trump’s presidency could mean for the UK. The poll highlights that nearly half of the voters are concerned about Nigel Farage’s close relationship with Trump, fearing it could hurt the UK’s interests.
Interestingly, 64% of Labour voters believe that the UK should strengthen its economic and security ties with Europe, especially with Trump looming. Calum Miller from the Liberal Democrats pointed out that people remember how unpredictable Trump was last time, and they want action to protect the economy and security.
Naomi Smith from Best for Britain emphasized that the Labour government needs to focus on economic growth, and aligning with the EU is key to that. She mentioned that businesses are struggling with Brexit-related issues, which is affecting consumers too.
Experts are also weighing in, saying that with global tensions rising, especially with Putin’s actions, it’s crucial for the UK to renew its ties with Europe. They warn that cozying up to Trump could be a big mistake economically, as losing trade with the EU would hurt more than any potential gains from the US.
The poll was conducted with over 2,200 UK adults, and it’s clear that many are looking for a shift in focus towards Europe as the political landscape changes.
