Bury braces for Storm Éowyn, bringing strong winds and heavy rain starting Thursday night into Friday morning
Bury: The storm is rolling in later today, Thursday, and the winds are going to pick up overnight. Expect a bit of a lull in the evening as the showers clear out, but don’t get too comfy because it’ll turn cloudy again pretty quickly.
As the night goes on, it’s going to get windier with Storm Éowyn making its entrance from the west. Friday morning is looking pretty rough with strong winds and heavy rain causing a lot of disruption.
Things should start to clear up as the day goes on, but it’ll still be windy with some heavy showers hanging around in the north. The Met Office has warned that we’ll see heavy rain and stronger winds kicking in during the early hours of Friday.
They mentioned that the rain should ease up after lunchtime, giving us some bright spells, but it’s still going to be very windy. A yellow warning for wind is in place for Bury starting at 6am Friday and lasting until 9pm.
They’re expecting wind speeds to hit around 60mph around midday, which is no joke. The yellow warning is actually in effect from midnight Thursday to midnight Friday, so keep an eye on that.
There’s even a chance of some snow on higher ground early Friday, but it should be short-lived and shouldn’t cause too much trouble. The Met Office is advising everyone to stay updated since weather warnings can change pretty quickly.
They’ve also warned that power cuts might happen, which could mess with mobile phone coverage and other services. Road, rail, air, and ferry services could be affected too, leading to longer travel times and possible cancellations.
Some roads and bridges might close, and there’s a risk of damage to buildings, like roofs being blown off. Flying debris could also pose a danger, so it’s best to stay safe.
As the storm starts to weaken, Saturday will still be breezy but with lighter winds. The Met Office said that while Storm Éowyn clears out to the northeast, Saturday will be drier for most, with showers replacing the heavy rain, especially in the north.
However, another low-pressure system is expected to move in from Sunday, bringing more wind and rain, so it looks like we’re not out of the woods just yet.
