A Streatham woman has been banned from owning pets for ten years after neglecting her dog, Kane, leading to severe malnutrition.
Streatham: Shannon Beecher, living on Gleneagle Road, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
She neglected her Italian mastiff, Kane, who lost a lot of weight. The case was heard at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on January 13.
Beecher received an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. She was also banned from owning pets for ten years.
Kane was found in a neighbor’s garden on May 1 last year. Lambeth Council’s dog warden took him in.
RSPCA Inspector Harriet Dailday visited the kennels the next day. She found Kane severely underweight and unsteady on his legs.
A police officer seized Kane, and the inspector took him to RSPCA Finsbury Park Animal Hospital.
Inspector Dailday reported that Kane was bright but incredibly thin. His ribs, hips, and spine were visible.
The vet said Kane was 10kg underweight and had been malnourished for four to five weeks. He also had a flea infestation.
The vet noted that Beecher failed to recognize Kane’s emaciation and didn’t seek help in time.
The court heard that Beecher had mental health issues. She was ordered to pay £400 in court costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
